Chapter 14

Taking this contract was quite possibly the biggest mistake he’d ever made.

It had the potential to be lucrative, especially if her father paid a bonus for her safe return, but no amount of credits were worth what he was being forced to endure. He never should have agreed to take work from an empath. He’d known they would be forced to share the same cramped ship for days on end—plenty of time for her to get under his skin with her incessant need to feel everything and make him feel it, too. Plenty of time for her to traipse around, so small and fragile yet so bold and brazen, more concerned about others than her own safety.

None of it should have mattered. He was an Asrai. He’d been trained practically from birth to excel at blocking out all emotions, even those foisted upon him by others. For nearly thirty years, he’d managed to do it. Now in the space of a week—less than that—one human had come along and undone all his progress.

She made him feel things he had no business feeling, made him want things he had no business wanting. Worse than that, he felt compelled to talk to her about those things. A complete waste of time, and yet her presence was soothing for some reason. He’d been positive she was using some kind of easily-concealed empath magic on him before, but now it seemed as if he was just not as immune to her as he once thought.

Telling her about his childhood… what had he been thinking? She’d already seen fit to look at him with pity. After that little story, those looks only grew in frequency and intensity, as if she somehow wished to take away that pain. Pain he absolutely didn’t feel, because all Asrai had such pain and trauma forced out of them at a young age. Pain he shouldn’t remember, but somehow still did, all of it coming back in a rush on Lomia.

It was ridiculous. He needed to complete this job before he did something stupid. Or more stupid, considering he’d already kissed her. Knowing her taste, knowing her scent and the way her warm, soft body felt in his arms was a recipe for disaster. He thought of it—thought of her when he lay in the ship’s tiny cabin. At one point, he’d been so worked up that his hand had traveled to his cock. He’d managed to stop himself, all too aware that she might be able to feel him doing it from the other room, and that would open up an entirely new host of problems.

The fact was, she hadn’t shied away from him when he kissed her. She wasn’t unresponsive and certainly wasn’t repulsed. Quite the opposite. She’d reacted with such heat and passion that Drayek had been caught up in it, yearning to be burned by her. He still yearned for it, even now, and wavered between needing to avoid her entirely and wanting her atop the ship’s primary console, her legs wrapped around his waist, her body welcoming his thrusts.
